National Play Day Parents of young children in Standish were delighted to hear that the village had been selected to hold the National Play Day this year thanks to the efforts of Cllr George Fairhurst. This fantastic event was on Wednesday 2 August 2006 at Ashfield Park. The day included fun and games for all children in the borough of Wigan. We are thrilled that Standish was given this opportunity, and are looking forward to next years event, which will be held in the east of the borough, with great anticipation. |

Welcome to Standish Visitors will soon get a fragrant welcome to Standish. Your Conservative councillors initiated plans to transform the scruffy piece of land on the corner of School Lane opposite St Marie's church. The damaged fencing has been removed and replaced with a line of trees. The area is also to be seeded creating a wild flower meadow to provide a glorious carpet of natural English colour that will enhance the areas appeal and provide a habitat for wildlife. |

Christmas Lights The two Conservative Councillors were again glad to help secure funding for the residents of Standish to have Christmas trees and lights on display. They feel that it is important to give their support to help bring a bit of cheer into people's lives over the festive season. |

Brookfield Road Pond The Standish Conservative team called in Metro engineers to clean up the site behind the Moat House. New seating and litterbins have been installed and the area has had a facelift to rejuvenate one of Standish's impressive nature reserves. |

A49 Bus Lane After witnessing several near-accidents ourselves, we brought to Council the issue of the dangers caused by the A49 bus lane. Sadly, our motion to eradicate the bus lane fell. However, we will persevere to rid Standish of this danger. |

Since June 2003 we have made it a priority to work for young people in Standish. Parents of young children in Standish will be delighted to hear that the village has been selected to hold the National Playday next year. This fantastic event is scheduled for 2nd August 2006, and will take place on Ashfield playing fields. The day promises fun and games for all toddlers in the borough of Wigan. We are thrilled that Standish has been give this opportunity, and are looking forward to it with great anticipation. Cllr Fairhurst is planning to take his grandchildren along to the event and is already very excited about it! We have also given a great deal of support to a scheme for teens in Standish. |

At a full meeting of Wigan council in August 2004 Labour Councillors proved how 'out of touch' with the community they are by voting to close Mere Oaks Special School, forcing pupils to enter mainstream schooling. The Conservative Party in Wigan is the only party that has supported the Save Mere Oaks Action Group from the start. This was not for political reasons but because it was morally right. The children that attend this very special establishment are the most vulnerable in the borough and need the highest quality support throughout their school career. The teachers and staff at Mere Oaks have done excellent work with their pupils, so why close this school? Labour wants to shut it so they can sell the land at a premium and raise more income from Council Tax. Mere Oaks children MUST come first. |

The Mobile Media Centre visits Standish Methodist Church every Friday evening, arriving at 7pm. The centre holds several computers for the use of young people in Standish. The computers use a range of programs and have Internet access. Thanks to our financial support, the scheme is now in the process of securing a second Mobile Media Centre for use in the Borough. We recently received a donation of three silver birch saplings. Each of these have been planted in one of the three primary schools in Standish: St. Marie's, St. Wilfrid's and Woodfold. We hope that children in the schools at present will be able to watch these saplings grow into trees, and that future pupils will be able to enjoy them for many years to come. |
